Our story

A legacy of support

Founded in 1967 by Drs. Wanda and Witold Rygiel, Rygiel Supports for Community Living began as a place of care for children with multiple disabilities. Over the decades, we have grown and evolved alongside the people we support, shifting our focus to person-directed care and community-based living. Today, Rygiel is committed to empowering individuals to live rich, fulfilling lives by fostering meaningful connections, championing choice, and ensuring that each person is recognized and valued as a vital member of their community.

living

Rygiel Supports for Community Living provides supported living for individuals with disabilities across 36 homes in Hamilton. Our approach is tailored to each person’s unique needs and aspirations, ensuring they receive the right support to thrive—both at home and in the community. With a strong commitment to person-directed care, we foster independence, belonging, and meaningful opportunities, empowering individuals to live their best lives on their own terms.

Community  
participation

Rygiel’s Community Participation Program, based at our main office on Cranbrook Drive, provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to engage in a diverse range of fun and meaningful activities. From arts and crafts to dance, cooking, and music, the program is designed to foster inclusion, develop skills, and strengthen social connections. By encouraging exploration, creativity, and personal growth, we empower individuals to build confidence, embrace new experiences, and actively participate in their communities.

Respite

Rygiel’s Family and Caregiver Support program provides respite care, giving families and caregivers the time and space to focus on their own well-being while knowing their loved ones are supported in a safe, welcoming environment. This service offers peace of mind, balance, and renewed energy, ensuring families and caregivers feel supported and confident in their vital roles.
